KOIN 6 News Staff - PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A veteran Portland road officer was just honored with an award from the city.

The Portland Police District's Office of Emergency Operations recognized Jeremy Meeks for his service.

The award was presented for his efforts when responding to 911 calls that concerned an elderly man.

Meeks' calls began to take on a menacing tone when he tried to stop one vehicle in particular. He stopped the car when it was on the wrong side of the road.

The man said, "I was driving over this street with it going over. I've just been doing that here for the last 20 years."

Meeks said he was on the lookout for another vehicle that was going to break his head. When he spotted it, he told the driver to stop. The man told him to turn around.

He then tried to turn around again but to no avail. The second driver was behind the first. Meeks finally caught up to the man and pulled the vehicle over.

Meeks said he had to pull the man out of the vehicle because it's a motor home.

The police dispatcher ordered him to put his hands up and he said, "Well it looks like I'm going to need to break my head." The dispatcher told him to comply and they both put their hands on the vehicle and he complied.

Meeks stopped to look for the car's lights before he stopped the driver. Meeks was able to follow the vehicle, which had its lights on, but it stopped on the wrong side of the road.

After he found it, the first driver attempted to turn around, but Meeks grabbed onto the trunk and tried to pull the man out.

He didn't get hold of any of the passenger's clothing but when he did his hand eventually got around the front window. He tried to get the man to give him his keys to go home, but he was in pain when he tried to push him and he didn't get far.

"As soon as I pulled on his body, I began feeling him getting taken to the hospital because of my hands," Meeks said.

It was at the hospital for several days before the driver died. The first officer suffered minor injuries. The driver was taken to the hospital for a permanent brain injury.

A: I think it is important to point out that we have to be very careful about comparing what is fair and what isn't fair. It's very important that we do not go off into sectarian or even political debates that might be causing confusion. I think in terms of that, the difference between an issue like torture or murder being justified and other policies are that they are justified in our own national interest, and so we're not going to turn it on its head to give Saudi authorities, in this case the UK and the US, another large financial windfall, which is clearly against the interests of the British, American and our own security.

A: It can be very small. We have never had a terrorist attack in the UK on the home front. If someone is planning an attack against the UK or one of its citizens then, unless we have a very specific intelligence, they won't come to the UK and they won't have a safe haven, which means it can be very low number of casualties.
